2010 Census

Written by Emil Darmo
There is no excuse to not participate!!

The form this year is the shortest in history – just take 10 minutes to answer 10 questions!! Check the 2 samples of Question 9, which asks for race/ethnicity. Let's make sure to write in either ASSYRIAN OR ASSYRIAN-AMERICAN, NOT Iranian Iraqi, or White.   There are enough Iranians and Iraqis count for themselves but there are so few of us.

Why Participate in the Census?

1)      Power: In a democracy, power comes from numbers. After the 2000 Census, the official number of Assyrian/Chaldean/Syriac was around 80,000, but I believe the actual number is at least 3 times this amount.  The largest concentration was recorded in Detroit, but only 15,000 were counted in all of Illinois!!
2)      Money: Each year $430 billion of the U.S. budget is influenced by census data. That's over $4 trillion in the next 10 years.
3)      Influence: Politicians, businesses, schools, cultural institutions, government agencies, financial aid, civic centers, and more depend on public census data to tailor their services to each community.
4)      Opportunity:  If we miss this opportunity to be counted, we have to wait until 2020 to try again.
5)      Safe:   Individual census data is absolutely confidential – it is against the law for any government employee to disclose census information (punishable by a 5 year prison term and/or a maximum fine of $250,000). It can never be shared and cannot affect your immigration status in any way.
6)      Important: Getting us all counted for Census 2010 is easily the most important thing we can do for ourselves and all Assyrians in the next 10 years.

The Census form should be mailed very soon – once you fill it out, send it back! Just 10 minutes of your time will go a long way for our Assyrian people in the years to come!

A Letter From Parish Priest

Written by Rev. George Bet Rasho

father_george.jpg “This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!”    2 Corinthians 5:17

`Prayers and blessings receive.  I greet you in the name of our Lord and Savior Jesus The Christ.  May this letter find you in the best of health and happiness.

Happy New Year everyone!  My question to you in the beginning of the New Year is what kind of year do you want to have?  I am positive the majority of us would like to have a happy, healthy and prosperous year, full of smiles and laughter with family and friends, and a year with no regrets.  Well, how can we obtain such a year?  If a farmer wanted to have an onion farm, would he sew tomato seeds? Obviously not, because the only way he would get onions is to plant onion seeds. Agreed?  In many ways it is the same with our lives.  By being optimistic, friendly, kind, forgiving, loving having a positive attitude and just simply smiling would really help us obtain such a year.  Yes, of course we may never be able to stop disease and tragedy but by having strong faith and a relationship with He who was victorious over death we can surely face and overcome such challenges as they approach.  We shall reap what we sew.  So, again I ask what kind of year are you going to have?  As a parish it will be an exciting year for us as we face a great challenge building our new church.  United we shall build is our theme for the year, and through your prayers we shall by His grace build our church.  I call upon each and every member, young and old to unite in this effort.  We have been called to turn a tragedy into an opportunity.  Always remembering that through love all things are possible. I wish you and yours a very Happy New Year, blessed by He who saved us.  In His Service,

Father George Bet Rasho

Cor-Bishop

LA Daily News: Assyrian Church keeps the faith after fire

Assyrian Church keeps the faith after fire

Parishioners vow to rebuild sanctuary consumed by flames Friday.

TARZANA - They had survived a millennium of religious persecution and the exodus from the Middle East.

But on the first Sunday after a raging fire tore through the Tarzana sanctuary that many considered their second home, members of the San Fernando Valley's largest Assyrian church said they will do as they have always done: stand strong in their faith.
